Don’t call it comeback!
Using a three-run ninth inning to earn an 8-7 win over the Colorado Rockies Wednesday night, the Arizona Diamondbacks are once again one win away from reaching .500 for the season.
The D-backs have lost in each of their last 10 attempts to even their record this season.
After falling behind 3-0 following the second inning, the D-backs would use an offensive outburst in the fourth featuring three consecutive doubles from Jake Lamb, Chris Owings and Nick Ahmed to tie the game at three a piece.
Then, in the fifth inning, D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt stepped to the plate to crush his 20th home run of the season; a two-run shot that gave the D-backs a brief 5-3 lead.
In the home half of the fifth, the Rockies would respond by tacking on four runs to give them a 7-5 lead that would last until the ninth inning.
In the ninth, D-backs right fielder Yasmany Tomas would would smack an RBI single that would drive in David Peralta and advance Goldschmidt, putting the winning run aboard. Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia would later use a 10-pitch at-bat to walk in the tying run against Rockies closer John Axford before Aaron Hill’s sacrifice fly to center scored Tomas to give Arizona an 8-7 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
D-backs reliever Brad Ziegler picked up the save in the bottom of the ninth — his 11th of the season — to give the D-backs their 35th win of the year.
Below we take a look at the D-backs’ thrilling victory, by the numbers.
1-29
The D-backs earned their first win this season when trailing after the eighth inning. They had been winless in their previous 29 tries.
20
Goldschmidt’s 20th home run of the season gave the D-backs a momentary 5-3 lead in the fifth inning. Against the Rockies this season, Goldschmidt is hitting .406 with two doubles, two home runs and eight RBI. He’s also reached base safely in 24 straight games versus Colorado, marking the third-longest by a D-back behind Luis Gonzalez (38; June 25, 2000-Sept. 21, 2002) and Justin Upton (27; June 4, 2010-May 17, 2012).

Goldschmidt also has a hit in 11 straight games at Coors Field (.320, 16-for-50), tied for the fifth-longest streak by a D-back (longest is Justin Upton’s 17-gamer, April 1, 2011-Sept. 24, 2012).
.524
With his 4-for-5 effort Wednesday night versus the Rockies, including an RBI single that cut the D-backs’ deficit to 7-6 in the ninth inning, Arizona right fielder Yasmany Tomas upped his batting average to a blistering .524 in five games versus Colorado this season. Tomas also scored the go-ahead run to give the D-backs an 8-7 lead later in the ninth.
6/24/14
The last time Colorado closer John Axford blew a save. A virtual lock to earn the save when coming on late in the game for the Rockies this season, Axford fell victim to a Hill sacrifice fly to center in the top of the ninth which gave the D-backs the game-winning run. For lovers of symmetry, Axford’s last blown save not only comes a year to the day, but also came against the D-backs at Chase Field.
0-10
With the win Wednesday, the D-backs are once again within one win of reaching .500 for the season. Arizona is 0-10 in their last 10 attempts to reach .500.
