Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo seemed optimistic Tuesday when talking about Kole Calhoun and his progression from left hamstring surgery.

A day later, however, and that sentiment has changed.

Calhoun suffered a setback during his rehab assignment with the Triple-A Reno Aces on Tuesday night. The outfielder was trying to avoid being hit by a pitch from Scott Kazmir when he tweaked his hamstring. He was removed from the game shortly after.

“I spoke to Kole this morning and we’re hoping for the best news possible,” Lovullo said Wednesday following the team’s 7-4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. “He knows his body as good as any athlete I’ve been around and he just felt like there was a little bit of discomfort and something that the medical team wanted to get evaluated.

“He’s getting evaluated right now and we’ll probably more of a bird’s eye view as to what exactly is going on in the coming days.”

Lovullo added the outfielder came back to Phoenix to undergo testing.

Calhoun suffered the hamstring injury when sliding into third base on a steal attempt in an April 27 matchup against the San Diego Padres.

He underwent surgery soon after, getting an excision of his damaged left semitendinosus tendon, the lower part of his hamstring.

In 13 games played this season, Calhoun is hitting .292 with an .812 OPS. He’s recorded five RBIs, two home runs and three walks, while striking out 13 times.

Calhoun’s setback adds to the D-backs’ injury woes. On Monday, Arizona placed outfielder Ketel Marte on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hamstring.

The D-backs are 3-24 in the month of June.
