Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers tore his Achilles while training, the team announced on Tuesday.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter added that Akers will miss the entire 2021 season.
This is a huge blow for Los Angeles as he was the team’s leading rusher last season.
In his rookie campaign, Akers ended with 625 yards and two touchdowns while also tallying 123 yards and one touchdown receiving in just 13 games.
With the Rams losing their No. 1 option, who will be in the backfield behind quarterback Matthew Stafford?
This is a question that likely won’t be answered until the end of training camp or maybe even the end of the preseason.
But good news for Los Angeles is that it has options.
Running back Darrell Henderson Jr. essentially split carries with Akers last season and had more touchdowns (5) and one less rushing yard (624).
The Rams also have two-year players Xavier Jones and Raymond Calais along with rookies Jake Funk and Otis Anderson at their disposal.
If they don’t like those options, then the team could go the free agency route and sign a veteran running back like Le’Veon Bell, Adrian Peterson or former Ram Todd Gurley.
Training camp is just a week away, and Los Angeles will have some important decisions to make as it tries to win its first NFC West title since 2018.
