For the first time in a couple of months, Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was able to announce his starting rotation for a weekend road series the day before an off-day.
The D-backs skipper said Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly and Caleb Smith will be on the bump Friday through Sunday when they take on the Cubs in Chicago.
“We’re finally getting some continuity,” Lovullo said during Wednesday’s pregame availability. “This is probably been the first time in two-and-a-half, three months that I’ve been able to sit here the day before an off-day leading into a weekend series I’ve been able to tell you that here is our starting rotation.
“So it’s nice to have it all filled in. We’re still minus a couple guys, we know that. But it’s nice to get it filled in enough to where we have that certain expectation as to who is going to land on what day.”
The Diamondbacks also announced several roster moves on Wednesday ahead of their series finale with the Pittsburgh Pirates at Chase Field.
Arizona reinstated right-handed pitcher Tyler Clippard from the 60-day injured list (sprained right shoulder).
The D-backs also claimed RHP Ty Tice off waivers from the Atlanta Braves and optioned him to Triple-A Reno along with right-hander J.B. Bukauskas.
Additionally, LHP Alex Young was designated for assignment, bringing the Diamondbacks’ 40-man roster to 40.
The D-backs on Wednesday will go for the three-game series sweep over the Pirates, with lefty Madison Bumgarner on the bump.
