After spending 20 years in the Valley, Shane Doan called it a career in 2017. Four years later, his son gets to carry on the Doan legacy in Arizona.

The Arizona Coyotes selected forward Josh Doan, with the No. 37 overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Doan was ranked the No. 87 skater in North America, according to NHL.com.

“No matter where you’re from, it’s going to be an honor to be selected by the team that’s from your city,” Doan said after getting drafted by his hometown. “But I think just kind of being around the rink my whole life as a kid it just makes it that much sweeter and cooler.”

His father Shane couldn’t believe it when his son’s name was called by the Coyotes.

“Today was the day that he’s worked a long time and hard for and for him to have the opportunity to get drafted into the NHL is something that he didn’t take for granted,” Doan said. “For me, it’s surreal that it happened to be the Coyotes.”

Doan added that he wasn’t a major part of the scouting process in the draft but was asked his thoughts on certain players. However, no one from Arizona’s scouting department talked to Doan about his son prior to the draft.

“I had literally zero to do with it,” Doan said. “I did see the list and I did see names getting crossed off and I knew that according to the list that they’d put together and they’re doing a great job with our draft. I knew it was close and it was coming but that was kind of inevitable.”

Following in his father’s footstep, Doan wants make a name for himself even though he understands the importance of his dad’s legacy to the Coyotes organization.

“I’m super excited to be part of the organization that my dad played for and what he’s kind of done down here in Arizona.” Doan said. “But I think my goal is kind of been to carve my own path throughout my life and I think me being in Arizona doesn’t really change that.”

Doan played for the Chicago Steel (USHL) last season and registered 31 goals, 39 assists and 70 points in 53 games.

The 19-year-old forward will be attending Arizona State in the fall and is thrilled for the opportunity to play his collegiate and professional hockey career in the same state.

“I’ll be excited to start ASU here,” Doan said. “And I think there’s got to be a few amount of people that have had the opportunity to grow up in their home state and kind of carry it out throughout their hockey career.”
