Confidence will help Cards offense start faster

Aug 9, 2012, 12:07 AM | Updated: 1:21 am

If you were watching the Hall of Fame game on August 5th, chances are you saw how inept the Cardinals offense looked in the first quarter.

The unit started slow in the season’s first preseason game of the year. A 15-yard scamper by LaRod Stephens-Howling was negated by a Kevin Kolb interception on the next play. The second offensive possession went three-and-out and the third, you guessed it, three-and-out.

See a pattern here?

But head coach Ken Whisenhunt understands that it is all part of a process that will benefit his team in the long run.

“I think everything we’re doing in practices and training camp is about being more efficient,” Whisenhunt said on Wednesday. “[Being efficient] allows us to have opportunities to start faster,” highlighting the team’s 14-play, 90-yard drive, that culminated in a 4-yard Alfonso Smith touchdown run.

The five-pass, nine-rush play selection indicates a more balanced offensive game plan which is something Whisenhunt says will encourage tenacity in the unit.

“It’s really all about making some plays early in the game. You don’t expect it to happen in the first preseason game and as we get a little bit more time with our [first unit] and their plan together, we’ll make a few more plays that will help build our confidence.”

The Cardinals face Kansas City on Friday in their second preseason game, where the offensive will be expected to display the poise Whisenhunt (and fans) desire.
