After ranking 28th out of 30 NHL teams in goals against per game last season (3.26), the Arizona Coyotes have moved to try and shore up their shortcomings between the pipes, naming Jon Elkin and Corey Schwab as the team’s new goaltending coaches.

Coyotes general manager Don Maloney officially announced the appointment of Elkin and Schwab Tuesday.

Elkin will be charged with working with all goaltenders on the Coyotes’ NHL roster and has experience coaching at the NHL, AHL, WHL, QMJHL and OHL levels, in addition to spending three seasons as the goaltending coach for the Calgary Flames from 1999-2002. Elkin also owns an impressive resume as an entrepreneur, establishing Jon Elkin’s Goalie Schools in Toronto, Ontario in 1984 at the age of 16; a school which he continues to run to this day. The school is renowned as one of the largest goalie schools in the world, having produced 21 NHL goalies, including Coyotes goalie Mike Smith.

The 44-year-old Schwab will be tasked with coaching the Coyotes’ minor league goaltenders and will assist Elkin in goalie evaluations. Schwab has spent the past eight seasons with San Jose as the goaltending development coach for the Sharks.

A former eight-year NHL veteran, Schwab appeared in 147 games with the New Jersey Devils, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs, recording a 42-63-13 record with a 2.89 goals against average and an .896 save percentage.
