The Arizona Diamondbacks selected the contract of pitcher Tyler Gilbert from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the D-backs optioned pitcher Miguel Aguilar back to the Aces.

“We’ve been getting a little thinned-out, thinned-down in our bullpen,” manager Torey Lovullo said pregame of the moves. “We needed to add some reinforcements. Gilbert has been throwing the ball extremely well all year long. I know he’s been starting in Reno but he’ll be in our bullpen in a variety of roles. We’ll throw him if we need him short. We’ll throw him if we need him long.”

Gilbert, 27, has been in the minors since being drafted in the sixth round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. The left-hander reached the Triple-A level in 2019, and the D-backs selected Gilbert in the 2020 Rule 5 Minor League Draft.

With the Aces this season, Gilbert has a 3.44 ERA over 11 appearances (10 starts) and 52.1 innings. Gilbert has a 1.24 WHIP, with hitters batting .234 against him. He would be making his debut in the majors for the D-backs if he were to make an appearance.

Aguilar, like Gilbert, had yet to reach the major-league level prior to this season. The 29-year-old lefty had been in the minors until making his debut for the D-backs on July 30.

In three outings for Arizona across 3.0 innings, Aguilar allowed four earned runs.

“Aguilar I think threw the ball extremely well, got his first opportunity to pitch at the big-league level and did a very good job,” Lovullo said. “He had thrown three of the last four days. It’s just where we’re at right now and he was the guy who we made the move with, but we’ll see him back here again.”

The D-backs take on the San Francisco Giants Tuesday night at 6:40 p.m. on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
