D-backs OF Kole Calhoun hits IL after hamstring injury on base paths

Kole Calhoun was placed on the injured list Thursday after he left the Arizona Diamondbacks game on Wednesday night, Torey Lovullo said.

In a corresponding move, the team has recalled Jake Hager from Triple-A Reno.

Calhoun favored his leg before sliding into third base and could tell that something was wrong before he even reached the bag, slamming his hand on the ground after sliding into third base.

The D-backs later announced that the injury was diagnosed as a left hamstring strain. It’s to the same hamstring that kept him out of action for more than a month earlier this year.

“I felt it kind of coming around second, half-way to third,” Calhoun said. “Felt it kind of grab on me. It’s the same leg, different spot, kind of the outside. We’ll kind of assess the damage tomorrow.”

Calhoun has missed time twice this season due to leg injuries.

He missed the first two series of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

He later would go on the injured list in April after suffering a strained left hamstring on a similar play, sliding into third base.

“Everyone is fairly encouraged that it was not more serious than it was,” Torey Lovullo said. “The last injury, I don’t think it was similar in any way. This is a different area, different muscle.”

That injury would keep him out of the lineup from April 27 to July 10.

On Wednesday, Calhoun was replaced in the game by pinch runner Drew Ellis. Ellis would come around to score on an RBI by David Peralta.

He would stay in the game at third base while Asdrubal Cabrera would move from third to first base and first baseman Pavin Smith would replace Calhoun in right field.

The D-backs would end up losing the game, 7-2.

Lovullo said before Thursday’s game that there is no timetable for Calhoun’s return.
