The Arizona Diamondbacks added a pair of arms to the roster Monday, recalling right-hander Humberto Mejia to make his first MLB start as a member of the D-backs and also pulling left-hander Joe Mantiply off the injured list.
Arizona also optioned left-hander Miguel Aguilar and infielder Jake Hager to Triple-A Reno, clearing the way for the pair of pitchers to join the team.
Mejia began the year with Double-A Amarillo before he was elevated to Triple-A in early June.
In 12 games with Reno, Mejia has gone 5-4 with a 5.93 ERA and 1.59 WHIP.
His start Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates is his first appearance in MLB as a member of the Diamondbacks.
Mejia, 24, has three career MLB starts as a member of the Miami Marlins. He was acquired by Arizona in the package that last year shipped outfielder Starling Marte to Miami.
Mantiply ends his second stint on the IL due to COVID-19 protocols having last pitched on Aug. 12. He’d pitched four games this month after landing on the IL due to a COVID-19 situation for the first time on July 30.
The reliever has a 3.95 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in 36 appearances in 2021.
