A handful of shakeups in the Associated Press Top 25 rankings after the first week of the college football season bumped the Arizona State Sun Devils up two slots, to No. 23, after opening the year No. 25.
Most notable was a result involving a fellow Pac-12 squad.
The No. 20 Washington Huskies lost to the Montana Grizzlies 13-7 in the opening week of the season. The Huskies weren’t the only ones to fall out of the top-25 altogether.
No. 23 Louisiana lost to the 21st-ranked Texas Longhorns by a 38-18 result. Other teams that fell out of the top-25 completely include formerly No. 16 LSU after a loss to UCLA and formerly No. 17 Indiana, which fell to Iowa.
Additional top-20 teams that took Week 1 hits included: No. 3 Clemson’s loss to No. 5 Georgia; No. 10 North Carolina’s loss to Virginia Tech; No. 12 Wisconsin’s defeat at the hands of No. 19 Penn State; No. 14 Miami’s loss to top-ranked Alabama.
Arizona State held its ranked status firmly with a 41-14 defeat of Southern Utah last Thursday.
The Sun Devils were favored over the Big Sky team by more than six touchdowns.
ASU found itself on more than just the AP Poll on Tuesday, landing at No. 25 on the USA Today Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. The Sun Devils moved up three spots in that ranking.
Here’s the AP Poll heading into Week 2, where the Sun Devils will face the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels.
