The Phoenix Mercury’s streak of one of their players earning the WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week reached five on Monday.
Brittney Griner earned her fifth player of the week nod of the season and fourth in the past five weeks.
For her career, it’s the 13th such honor, which is second in Mercury franchise history behind Diana Taurasi’s 20.
Griner averaged 23 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and 2.5 blocks over two games over the past week, a 76-75 win against the Atlanta Dream and a 86-81 loss to the Indiana Fever. In between those outings, she missed a win against the Atlanta Dream due to person reasons.
Despite the loss to the Sun on Saturday, Griner poured in 25 points to go with 12 boards, four assists, two steals and three blocks.
Griner has taken home player of the week awards on July 12, Aug. 23, Sept. 6 and now Sept. 13. Teammate Skylar Diggins-Smith won Western Conference Player of the Week on Aug. 30.
Phoenix won 10 straight games prior to its most recent game, the loss against Connecticut on Saturday.
The Mercury (19-11) next play Friday at the Seattle Storm. Seattle (20-11) currently sits in the No. 5 seed in the standings, just ahead of Phoenix.
It is the Mercury’s second-to-last game of the year. They close the regular season Sunday at home against the Las Vegas Aces.
