The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated starting pitcher Merrill Kelly on Wednesday and placed fellow starter Tyler Gilbert on the 10-day injured list due to elbow fatigue.
In addition, the team transferred Kevin Ginkel to the 60-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.
Kelly, 32, will start for the D-backs on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It will be the right-hander’s first outing since landing on the COVID-19 list in mid-August. His return comes after a solid two-month stretch when Kelly dropped his ERA from 5.40 to 4.30, allowing 21 earned runs over his last 10 outings.
Gilbert was six starts into his first time as a part of a Major League rotation. After notoriously throwing a no-hitter in his first-ever start, Gilbert has been solid, posting a 3.15 ERA as a starter.
Ginkel was sent to Triple-A Reno on June 21, and his last outing was on June 22. With the D-backs, Ginkel had a 6.35 ERA in 32 games.
Kelly’s first start back has a 7:10 p.m. first pitch time in Los Angeles. You can hear that game on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
