The Arizona Cardinals added kicker Matt McCrane to the open roster spot on their practice squad Thursday.
McCrane, who went undrafted out of Kansas State in 2018, spent training camp and preseason with Arizona his rookie year before he was released before the regular season began. After a stint with the then-Oakland Raiders, he re-joined the Cardinals that same season, both on the practice squad and then on the active roster when starting kicker Phil Dawson was injured.
McCrane made 5-of-9 field goals with Oakland before latching on with the Cardinals for a Week 11 game against the Raiders. He made three extra points and did not attempt a field goal in his lone appearance with Arizona.
McCrane was released and made an appearance in Week 17 of that season for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
That 2018 season is the extent of his NFL experience, though he spent time on the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad last season.
He made all nine of his extra point attempts and went 8-of-12 on field goals in NFL action.
McCrane is insurance for Arizona, which has Matt Prater on the active roster.
Prater made five extra points, hit a 34-yard attempt and missed one from 43 yards in a Week 1 victory against the Tennessee Titans.
The Cardinals worked out McCrane, Blake Haubeil and Alex Kessman on Wednesday, according to All Cardinals’ Howard Balzer.
