Ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks series finale against the Houston Astros, pitcher Jake Faria was designated for assignment and infielder Ildemaro Vargas was selected from Triple-A Reno, the team announced.
Faria has struggled this season, posting a 5.51 ERA in 32.1 innings pitched. The righty has appeared in 23 games for the D-backs in 2021, including three starts on the mound. Faria gave up five home runs on the season and walked 13 batters. He signed with the D-backs on June 19 after being released by the Los Angeles Angels.

The 30-year-old made his MLB in 2017, as a member of the D-backs then. Vargas was in Arizona’s system for three years before going to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2020. He returned to the D-backs this season on June 2, when he was purchased from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The switch-hitter is a career .236 hitter which included eight home runs and 41 RBIs.
