Mikal Bridges sees Phoenix sports fandom, even thanks to ‘little Red Sea’

It was a fairly quick turnaround toward success for the Phoenix Suns. They won 19 games during Mikal Bridges’ rookie year in 2018-19, were sparked by a bubble run the next season and then made the NBA Finals in July.

So Bridges is one to appreciate going through to journey and seeing a dormant fanbase for Phoenix’s original pro sports team awaken.

Even when it comes to understanding a fanbase that, in other sports, he does not see eye-to-eye with.

“Especially for me in my first year losing about 20-some games in a row, only winning 19 games … Seeing that was tough,” Bridges said. “Looking at it now, and seeing how much we got better and Monty (Williams) coming over here and changing things up, the crowd and the people, you could tell it’s a sports town and a sports city. It’s tough when you lose a lot to really tell. You can tell when a city really loves their team.

“And this is — I’m a Rams fan so I see everybody killing me about the Cardinals. They’re diehard for their little Red Sea.”

Yes, that is correct. Mikal Bridges gets love from the Suns fans who also absolutely despise his NFL tastes.

Realizing that he had just disparaged Cardinals fans during a game week in which his Rams are preparing to host Arizona at SoFi Stadium, Bridges did not back down Monday.

“Little Red Sea,” he repeated. “Like always, a Rams W, that’s my prediction.”
