Suns’ Cam Payne got a tattoo of Taz the Tasmanian devil in a haboob

Sep 28, 2021, 6:04 PM

Many people outside of Phoenix have never seen a haboob, let alone have an idea of what they are.

Now, Suns guard Cam Payne has one tattooed on his leg.

The image is a large Tasmanian devil sitting next to a Valley sign in what appears to have the same font as the Suns’ popular uniforms.

“Phoenix inspired one,” Payne said Tuesday. “This is basically me. Taz is me, in a haboob. I kind of embraced that nickname. He’s just coming through the Valley. I got a little Valley sign.”

The tattoo is fitting as the guard is know for his speed and ability to get around defenders.

Payne recently signed a three-year, $19 million contract to stay in Phoenix.

The self-nicknamed Haboob averaged 8.4 points, 3.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 18 minutes per game. He played a vital role in the 2020-21 playoff run as starting point guard Chris Paul was battling injury.

So where did the idea for a Taz-in-a-haboob tattoo come from?

Two months ago, the Tennessee native seemed to be having fun with his new vocabulary as an adopted Phoenician, giving himself a new nickname.

Payne asked for an edit of himself with a haboob, to which suns fans responded accordingly.

Fast forward two months and Payne showed up to Suns training camp donning the new ink on his left leg.
