Report: Skelton’s job, but Arizona Cardinals could still be shopping for QB

Aug 23, 2012, 6:15 PM | Updated: 6:15 pm

Many people are viewing the Cardinals’ preseason game with the Tennesee Titans Thursday as the one that will ultimately determine the QB competition.

After all, by the time the night is over both Kevin Kolb and John Skelton will have each started two games, and at that point should have given the coaching staff a good enough look to determine who should lead the team going forward.

That may not be the case, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter, while saying the starting job is now John Skelton’s to lose, adds the Cards may not be done looking for a signal caller.

“It doesn’t stop Arizona from continuing to look around the league to see if any other quarterbacks are available before the final roster cuts either through trade or on waivers,” he said of Skelton presumably getting the nod. “But for the time being it looks like Skelton has that job in his sights.”

Who the Cardinals could acquire is anyone’s guess, though Seattle’s Tarvaris Jackson and Miami’s Matt Moore are rumored to be available.

And, it’s worth noting that adding a veteran could very well mean the end of Kolb’s tenure in Arizona, as it would be tough to justify keeping him with another veteran passer on the roster.

But that’s neither here nor there — yet. As of now the Cardinals still have not named a starting QB, and even if they’re not satisfied with the current options, the idea that they could bring someone in so late in the process and expect them to make an impact this season is questionable.
