Having potentially lost tight end Maxx Williams for the remainder of the 2021 season, the Arizona Cardinals have agreed to sign veteran Richard Rodgers to the practice squad, reports Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

Rodgers spent 2020 with the Philadelphia Eagles and in 14 games (four starts) caught 24 passes on 31 targets for 345 yards and two touchdowns.

The tight end re-upped with the Eagles in June but was waived on Aug. 31, before the regular season began. He re-signed on the practice squad but was released in September.

Rodgers spent the bulk of his career with the Green Bay Packers, who drafted him in the third round in 2014.

His best season came in 2015, when he made 85 receptions for 510 yards and eight touchdowns.

Now with the Cardinals, Rodgers could be moved to the active roster but would have to leap-frog current tight ends Demetrius Harris and Darrell Daniels to earn playing time.

The Cardinals officially announced Tuesday that they activated Daniels from the reserve/COVID-19 list, while releasing cornerback Luq Barcoo and receiver Josh Doctson from the practice squad. Those two releases opened a spot on the practice squad for Arizona to sign Rodgers.

Williams reportedly suffered a knee injury serious enough to put his season in question. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury did not have an update on Williams’ status after practice on Monday.
