Davis Mills to start at QB for Texans vs. Cardinals, Tyrod Taylor still out

Texans starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor will not be ready to play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals as he continues recovering from a hamstring injury, meaning another start for rookie third-round pick Davis Mills.

Texans head coach David Culley said he hoped Taylor begins getting practice work this week but added Mills was already tabbed to start.

“With a hamstring, until that thing is completely right, when you play the way he plays the game there’s always that chance of (bad things) happening,” Culley told reporters Wednesday. “We have methods and have ways of looking and seeing how strong it is and where he’s at.

“When he gets to that point where we know it’s right, we’ll have him back out on the field. Right now it’s not that time.”

Taylor led Houston to a season-opening win against the Jacksonville Jaguars and was well on his way to pushing them to a 2-0 start in Week 2 against the Cleveland Browns before the injury.

He completed 71% (31 of 44) of his passes through just more than a game, throwing three touchdowns to no picks and adding 55 rushing yards and another score. Things haven’t been the same since Taylor was hurt.

Mills replaced him in the 31-21 Week 2 loss and has led the Texans in four more defeats since. The Stanford product is completing 64% of his passes but has five touchdowns to seven interceptions.

The Cardinals host the Texans for a 1:25 p.m. kickoff at State Farm Stadium. The game will air on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
