TEMPE — The Arizona State Sun Devils had a bye this past weekend, one that may have come at just the right time.

Following the 35-21 loss to Utah last time out, it looks like ASU will have some players returning from injury ahead of Saturday afternoon’s home matchup with Washington State at 12 p.m.

Head coach Herm Edwards on Monday said cornerback Chase Lucas and wide receiver Johnny Wilson are ready to play, while safety Evan Fields will be a game-time decision.

“But other than that I think most of our guys — we got a lot of guys back,” Edwards said.

“I mean the guys who are injured for the season — you don’t get those guys back. We’ve lost some pretty good players, especially on the D-line that’re gone. That’s just how it goes. Every team has that. That’s what you deal with.”

Lucas has missed two games this season due to injury: at home vs. Colorado and last week’s road matchup with Utah.

The senior DB and captain is one of the most experienced players on the defensive side of the ball for the Sun Devils having played in 48 games since 2016. In five appearances this season, Lucas has 13 tackles (12 solo) and two pass deflections.

Wilson, a redshirt freshman, has missed each of ASU’s last three games. The wideout’s two biggest games this season have both come at home, with his lone score on the year coming against UNLV and his season-high in yards of 70 vs. Colorado.

The possibility of Fields returning on Saturday could provide a huge boost to the Sun Devils’ secondary. After missing the UCLA and Utah games, having both Lucas and Fields back in the secondary would mark only the fifth game out of eight this season that the duo has played together.

Fields also has immense experience under his belt with 43 career games played since 2017. In five appearances this year, the senior DB has totaled seven tackles (four solo).
