The Arizona Cardinals will begin to traverse the back end of their schedule without longtime long snapper Aaron Brewer.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said Wednesday the long snapper suffered a broken arm in the team’s 31-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

“He will be out a number of weeks,” Kingsbury said. “Hopefully he gets well soon.”

With Brewer sidelined for the near future, Arizona looked to free agency to fill his role, trying out three long snappers on Tuesday before signing long snapper Kyle Nelson to the practice squad on Wednesday.

Nelson will likely be one of the two standard elevations the team makes ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

Brewer has been one of the constants on special teams since he joined the team in 2016 after four years and a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos. He started all 16 games from 2018-20.

Aside from his consistency, Brewer also has a ton of chemistry with kicker Matt Prater, having played in Denver and now in Arizona together. Brewer and Prater have been a part of two of the larger kicks in recent history, a then-NFL record 64-yarder in 2013 with the Broncos and a Cardinals franchise record-setting 62-yarder this season against the Minnesota Vikings.

“I love Aaron, known him for 10 years and I kinda feel like I was his mentor in the beginning when he first came to Denver,” Prater said during training camp.

“It’s awesome when you get to work with someone you’re really close with. We definitely have a good relationship, good bond. He’s like a brother.”
