Arizona State women’s basketball is honoring one of its legends from its most successful run.

Briann January will have her jersey number put in the rafters of Desert Financial Arena on Friday when the Sun Devils play host to Minnesota.

January played for the Sun Devils from the 2005-06 season to 2008-09. She was a part of four consecutive NCAA Tournament teams in a period where ASU made the postseason tournament five straight years, a program-first. ASU made its only two Elite Eight appearances with January on the team.

She excelled in scoring with 1,317 points in her ASU career, ninth in program history.

A lot of her scoring came beyond the three-point arc. Her 132 three-point field goals are sixth in program history. Her senior season was especially prolific with 65 three-point field goals, setting the program’s single-season record at the time. Katie Hempen broke the record in the 2014-15 season with 76 three-pointers and then matched January’s mark the following year.

January’s three-point percentage of 46.9% in her senior season ranked second in the country.

January was not just a scorer, though. She ranks second in program history in both assists (534) and steals (265). Her 167 assists in the 2008-09 season is fourth in program history for a single season.

She earned honorable mention All-America honors in her final two seasons with ASU. January was part of the All-Pac-10 First Team in her senior season after averaging 12.3 points per game with 4.8 assists.

January has enjoyed a successful WNBA career. She won the WNBA championship with the Indiana Fever in 2012 and became an all-star in 2014.

Her defense has earned her recognition throughout her 13 years in the WNBA. She earned WNBA All-Defensive Team honors seven times in her career, including First Team honors this past season with the Connecticut Sun.
