The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired outfielder Jordan Luplow from the Tampa Bay Rays in return for infielder Ronny Simon, the team announced Friday.
The Diamondbacks have designated pitcher Brett de Geus for assignment in a corresponding move.
Luplow entered the major leagues in 2017 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but most recently finished the year with the Tampa Bay Rays. In five seasons he has batted for an average of .225 with 34 home runs and 92 RBIs.
He can play both the outfield as well as first base. Luplow adds another player to the D-backs roster that can play multiple positions.
Simon came over from the trade that sent Andrew Chafin to the Chicago Cubs a year ago. He batted for a .232 average while hitting two home runs and 11 RBIs for the Hillsboro Hops in 82 at bats.
This is the first trade the D-backs made this offseason after finishing tied for the worst record last season with the Baltimore Orioles and will be picking second in the next MLB Draft.
