Black Monday in the NFL: Brian Flores out in Miami, Bears fire Matt Nagy

Jan 10, 2022, 8:12 AM | Updated: 10:17 am

Monday marks a dark day for many on-the-edge NFL coaching staffs.

Here’s the latest head-coaching staff changes across the league with openings already apparent in Denver, Jacksonville and potentially Las Vegas.

Dolphins make a surprise firing

Though the Miami Dolphins went through a curious season that included an early seven-game losing streak followed by a seven-game winning streak, head coach Brian Flores didn’t survive it.

The team announced his firing after Miami finished 9-8 on the year. Flores went 24-25 in three years as head coach.

ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reports that Flores’ relationships with general manager Chris Grier and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa did not age well.

Bears wipe slate clean

The Chicago Bears have fired head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Nagy’s squad had two playoff appearances in 2018 and 2020 since he was hired. His tenure ends with a 34-31 record after Chicago went 6-11 this year.

Pace took the GM gig for the Bears in 2015 and hired Nagy and his successor, John Fox. As far as personnel moves, Pace is most well known for trading up to select quarterback Mitchell Trubisky second overall in 2015.

Vikings fire coach, GM

The Minnesota Vikings announced they have fired general manager Rick Spielman and coach Mike Zimmer after missing the playoffs the last two years.

Zimmer ends his Vikings tenure with a 72-56 regular season record and three playoff appearances since 2014.
