When John Skelton injured his ankle in the fourth quarter against the Seattle Seahawks, all eyes turned to quarterback Kevin Kolb.
Kolb, who lost the starting job to Skelton in the preseason, was met with boos as he entered the game with the Arizona Cardinals down 16-13 on their own 32-yard line.
To the surprise of Cardinals fans everywhere, Kolb led the offense down the field and capped the drive with the game-winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Andre Roberts.
Skelton has not yet been ruled out for next week’s game against the Patriots, but Kolb said he is as if he is going to start.
“I go about saying I’m the starter because that is the way you got to approach every single week,” Kolb said. “That’s the way I tried to do it last week.”
Kolb, who said he doesn’t read anything the media writes about him, feels that he can’t get too high or low after this big win. Instead, he is turning his focus on his team’s trip to Foxborough.
“Everyone wants to pat you on the back after something like last night, then everyone wants to kick you down whenever you’re down,” Kolb said. “We will have to go out and work just as hard this week and even harder to beat a team like the Patriots.”
Kolb’s drive and the team’s victory provide the Cardinals with much needed momentum leading into their next game.
“I try to take the positive out of everything I’m doing, what the offense is doing and what the team is doing,” Kolb said. “Obviously last night, pulling one out, was something to build off of.”
A great deal of Kolb and the offense’s success last game came while running the no-huddle. Kolb said he is used to it because his high school and college ran it.
“You stop over-thinking the game and you just go out there and play,” Kolb said. “I think the biggest thing is that it stalemates the defense a little bit.”
With his back against the wall, Kolb said that it allowed him to let loose. He feels that the offense’s ability to play like this all the time is key.
“You got to find a way to do that when you’re on top and you’re playing well too,” Kolb said. “That’s a balance that I continue to try to work on, and I know that if myself and the offense can ever continue to play that way then we are unstoppable.”
