Longtime Arizona Cardinals athletic trainer John Omohundro was inducted into the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

The PFATS announced its inaugural class of five inductees on Feb. 16, and Omohundro received a trophy at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Omohundro worked for the Cardinals for 42 years from 1967-2008, moving with the team to the Valley from St. Louis ahead of the 1988 season. He became the head athletic trainer in 1971 after serving as an assistant.

The 78-year-old retired after Arizona’s Super Bowl berth in February 2009 and was the longest-tenured trainer in the NFL at the time.

He received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2014, which honors trainers for exemplary careers and is selected by the PFATS Executive Committee.

“As we induct our inaugural class of the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society Hall of Fame, we could not have imagined a more distinguished and revered group of men,” PFATS president Reggie Scott said in a press release.

“These former Professional Football Athletic Trainers and PFATS members embody just want it means to provide best-in-class healthcare to the athletes we serve.”
