Colt McCoy agrees to new 2-year deal to remain with Arizona Cardinals

Mar 14, 2022, 1:33 PM

The Arizona Cardinals and quarterback Colt McCoy agreed to a two-year deal on Monday, the team announced.

The new contract is worth $7.5 million with $6 million fully guaranteed, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

McCoy filled in nicely for an injured Kyler Murray, going 2-1 as Arizona’s three-game starter. He completed an impressive 75.5% of his passes for 684 yards and three touchdowns to one interception. He racked up a 103.2 quarterback rating.

Beyond the stats, the backup signal caller provided another voice for Murray and the coaching staff.

“Colt’s a great leader first and foremost,” tight end Zach Ertz told reporters after a Week 9 win over the Seattle Seahawks. “He’s been in the league a long time, he understands the locker room, he understands what guys want to do and he’s seen all the looks. There’s nothing a defense can do that he hasn’t seen before, whether he’s been playing, whether he’s been studying film over the past however many years he’s been in the league, he’s seen it.

“He’s always confident, he’s always calm, nothing’s gonna rattle him. … I think everyone knew what a great mentor he could be to Kyler but he’s a great football player. People should never take that for granted.”

Outside of McCoy, the Cardinals have Murray and third-stringer Trace McSorley under contract through next season.

The Cardinals continue to remain busy during the league’s legal tampering period, having already agreed to a new three-year deal with starting running back James Conner.

Arizona also agreed to terms on a new three-year contract with tight end Zach Ertz on Sunday night, while also restructuring offensive lineman Justin Pugh’s deal.

Not every Cardinals free agent is returning to the Valley, however, with running back Chase Edmonds and wide receiver Christian Kirk taking their talents to Miami and Jacksonville, respectively.
