The Arizona Diamondbacks announced three moves ahead of Sunday’s spring training action. The D-backs optioned 24-year-old relief pitcher Edwin Ucenta to Triple-A Reno and reassigned reliever Kevin Ginkel and catcher Grayson Greiner to minor-league camp.
Ucenta was selected off waivers by Arizona in October after pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. He tossed 20.1 innings and had a 6.64 ERA with a 4.40 FIP for L.A.
Ginkel has had a role in the D-backs’ bullpen since making his debut in 2019.
The former Arizona Wildcat finished the 2021 season with a 6.325 ERA in 28.1 innings. His most effective season thus far has been his first, as he worked a 1.48 ERA in 24.1 innings as a rookie.
Arizona signed Greiner to a minor-league deal on March 14. Greiner is 29 years old and played 137 games for the Detroit Tigers over the past four seasons.
The D-backs’ moves leave 47 players remaining in big-league camp including 10 non-roster invitees. There are 26 pitchers, four catchers, 10 infielders and seven outfielders in camp with Opening Day set for April 7.
Teams can reportedly carry 28 players in April to make up for the shortened spring training caused by MLB’s lockout.
