The Arizona Diamondbacks and Ketel Marte have agreed to a contract extension for the 28-year-old one-time All-Star, the team officially announced on Tuesday.

The deal is expected to be a five-year contract worth $51 million in new money, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Zach Buchanan. It is valued at $76 million total and rewrites club options for 2023-24 into guaranteed years and takes his contract three additional seasons beyond that with a club option for 2028.

Marte, 28, signed a five-year extension worth $24 million in 2018, before he broke out as one of the most impactful hitters in Major League Baseball.

He hit .329 with a .981 OPS and 32 home runs en route to finishing fourth in the National League MVP race in 2019, when he reached his first All-Star Game. He continued to hit well last season, although hamstring and hip injuries held him to 90 games.

Marte has seen time in the infield and outfield for the D-backs but is expected to spend more time this season in his preferred role in the infield.

MLB Network insider Jon Heyman reported on Saturday that the discussed extension offer guaranteed the two option years while adding three more worth $75 million.

D-backs spring training continues through April 5 with the season opener on the road in San Diego on April 7.
