SCOTTSDALE — Opening Day is still over a week away, but that hasn’t stopped the injury bug from already biting the Arizona Diamondbacks.

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said pregame on Wednesday that both shortstop Nick Ahmed and outfielder Jordan Luplow were trending toward being out for the team’s season opener on April 7 against the San Diego Padres at Chase Field.

Ahmed had an MRI on his shoulder on Sunday and got a second opinion earlier in the week. Lovullo said that the shortstop got two injections in his shoulder and will be shut down from all baseball activity for 10 days.

“He’s an unbelievable — he’s one of those athletes that takes care of his body, so he might heal a little quicker,” Lovullo said. “So we’re going to proceed without him for a few days. We’ve got things covered and we’ll see how he heals up.”

Things didn’t sound as promising for Luplow’s recovery, however, as the outfielder has a grade 1 oblique strain that Lovullo said will keep him out “not in terms of days. He’ll be out a little while.”

Lovullo added that Luplow suffered the injury while swinging during Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs at Sloan Park.

D-backs starting pitcher Zac Gallen will be making his spring training debut on Wednesday as the Diamondbacks take on the Colorado Rockies as visitors at Salt River Fields at 1:10 p.m.
