D-backs explode in eighth, Cahill wins for first time since April: By The Numbers

...

Trevor Cahill wasn’t as effective Saturday night as he was in his previous outing — allowed just one run over seven innings in a 3-2 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates — but nonetheless the Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander did what he needed to do: Fight through a tough start to protect the bullpen from a long evening.

The 25-year-old did just that, overcoming a rough two-run first inning to record his third consecutive quality start by retiring 15 of the last 17 batters he faced.

While Cahill took care of business on the mound, Alfredo Marte, David Peralta and Mark Trumbo did the heavy lifting at the plate — carrying the D-backs’ offense with a trio of long balls.

Nolan Arenado momentarily made things interesting in the eighth with a solo home run off of Brad Ziegler, but Arizona closed out the National League West contest with nine unanswered runs in the bottom half of the inning to preserve an 14-4 victory at Chase Field.

Here’s a look back at the 10-run win by the numbers:

4:

In addition to his three-run home run, Trumbo knocked in an addtion run with an insurance double in the eighth.

The four RBI are the most the D-backs first baseman/outfielder has had in a game since June 19, 2012 — which oddly enough came against an NL West opponent (Giants).

7:

Cahill tied a season-high with seven strikeouts. Of the seven punchouts, six came by way of swings.

8:

Arizona scored nine runs in the eighth inning — tying the team-record for most in an inning previously set on eight different occasions.

9:

With his three hits in the rout, Ender Inciarte extended his hitting streak to a career-high nine games. Inciarte has now hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games.

17-of-29:

Cahill was at his best early in counts vs. the Rockies. In fact, he threw first-pitch strikes to 17 of the 29 batters he faced.

25:

David Peralta continued his torrid pace at the plate by collecting his 25th multi-hit performance since being called up back on June 2 — highlighted by his first career grand slam in the eighth. His 67 hits through the first 56 games of his career are the most by a D-back.

322:

Cahill picked up his second win of the season Saturday. It was also his first positive result as a starter since Sept. 21, 2013 — a span of 322 days.

2007:

Peralta became the first D-backs rookie to have five RBI in a game since Mark Reynolds achieved the feat back on Aug. 30, 2007.

June 3 – 15, 2012:

For the first time since June 3-15, 2012, Cahill has recorded lasted at least seven innings in three straight outings.

4/21/2014:

Trumbo’s three-run blast was his first since going yard against the Chicago Cubs back on April 21, 2014. He’s reached base safely in nine straight games, as well.
