Perez falls apart in extras, Rockies deny D-backs of sweep: By The Numbers

...

All good things must come to an end.

And Sunday afternoon, two good things did just that with one swing of the bat.

Corey Dickerson’s solo shot in the 10th inning sealed a 5-3 victory for the Colorado Rockies — ending the team’s six-game losing streak against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The game-winning blast, along with the addition run scored on an RBI single by Wilin Rosario, also closed out an impressive run by D-backs left-hander reliever Oliver Perez. Before Dickerson’s drive into the right field bleachers, Perez had allowed just one run in his last 17 innings of relief.

The loss, which was just Arizona’s third in an extra-inning game this season, denied Kirk Gibson’s squad of its third series sweep of the campaign.

Here’s a look back at the two-run defeat by the numbers:

1:

Rookie third baseman Jake Lamb recorded his first career multi-hit performance Sunday with singles in the fourth and eighth innings.

2:

Suffice it to say the Rockies were abysmal defensively throughout the three-game set at Chase Field. In all three contests, Colorado committed at least two errors in the field — including a throwing gaffe in the fourth that led to Arizona’s third run Sunday.

5:

Sunday marked the fifth time in 2014 that Wade Miley has given up two or more home runs in a game.

In 2013, the left-hander only had four such performances.

7:

Seven of Miley’s 22 home runs allowed this season have come on the first pitch of an at-bat.

8:

In his six innings of work, Miley struck out eight batters — his highest total since the All-Star break. Thus far in 2014, the 27-year-old has struck out at least eight in nine outings.

9:

With his two-run double in the first, Mark Trumbo extended his hit streak to a season-high seven games. In that span, he has a team-high nine RBI.

14:

Although he didn’t factor into the final decision, Miley picked up his 14th quality start — most by any D-backs pitcher. In fact, Miley has six more quality starts than his next closest teammate, Chase Anderson (8).

3/31/2014:

The only other time Perez allowed more than a single run in an appearance with the D-backs came during the home opener back on March 31.

4/24/2014:

Dickerson’s home run was only the second allowed by Perez all season. The first came back on April 24, 2014 against Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo.
