Wainright made 44 appearances this season for the Suns, averaging 2.1 points and 1.2 rebounds per game while shooting 39% from the field.
Phoenix had waived forward Frank Kaminsky on Thursday, making room for one more spot heading into the playoffs as the No. 1 overall seed.
He and recent addition Iffe Lundberg were the two-way players up for the last roster spot, but Lundberg has only appeared in three games for Phoenix.
Wainright played in Germany and France before making the Toronto Raptors’ training camp roster and eventually signing with the Suns.
The 6-foot-6, 250-pound forward had his best game as a Sun against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday, scoring 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists and added three steals.
