D-backs’ Trevor Cahill able to hold game-long lead in win over Marlins: By The Numbers

...

Trevor Cahill’s time in the minors is now paying dividends.

Of course, on Friday in Miami, the Arizona Diamondbacks starter had a three-run cushion by the time he took the mound against the Marlins, thanks to Cliff Pennington and Aaron Hill going yard off of Brad Hand.

Like Cahill’s season, the beginning didn’t look that great. The right-hander surrendered two runs straight away, almost losing the lead.

But that would be the extent of the scoring for both teams Friday, as they combined for just six hits in the remaining eight frames of the game.

Here’s a look back at the win by the numbers:

1

David Peralta is mired in a 1-for-23 slump over his last five games, with his lone hit being RBI triple, which came Thursday on his birthday. The D-backs outfielder has seen his season batting average drop from .313 to .293 in that span, striking out 10 times over the stretch and failing to earn a walk. He was 0-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt Friday.

2

Pennington had a game-high two hits Friday, going 2-for-4, scoring a run and driving one in. No one else on either roster had more than one hit.

4

Cahill has turned in four consecutive quality starts now, going 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA against the Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies and Marlins.

12

Cahill coerced 12 groundballs Friday while allowing just five flyballs.

33

Another D-backs player celebrated his birthday in Miami, as relief pitcher Oliver Perez turned 33 Friday. He pitched two-thirds of an inning, walking one and throwing 10 pitches while seeing his ERA drop to 2.11 on the season.

459

Pennington’s home run in the first inning was the infielder’s first in 459 days. He last homered on May 13, 2013.
