D-backs’ Humberto Castellanos throws 4 scoreless frames in loss to Mets

The New York Mets scored three runs in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie against the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 5-0 win on Sunday.

First baseman Pete Alonso scored off a double by third baseman Eduardo Escobar and a throwing error by Arizona right fielder Pavin Smith to take a 1-0 lead.

New York piled on two runs in the inning before Alonso broke the game open with a two-run blast in the seventh off reliever Matt Peacock.

The D-backs received another strong start on the mound, this time from pitcher Humberto Castellanos.

Castellanos threw four scoreless innings in his first start of the season. He walked three batters and threw 38 strikes in 71 pitches, but he only allowed one hit.

However, five Mets pitchers combined for a five-hitter for New York’s third shutout in 10 games this season.

Filling in for injured Taijuan Walker, left-hander David Peterson tossed 4 1/3 effective innings.

Trevor Williams got two outs and Chasen Shreve pitched two perfect innings to earn New York’s first win by a reliever this year. Drew Smith and Edwin Díaz worked an inning apiece to finish it.

The Mets have won 12 of 13 home games against Arizona dating to August 2017.

TOUGH WIND

At first pitch, winds were announced at 24 mph and they seemed to increase as the day went on. It led to trouble for Mets right fielder Starling Marte, who lost a pair of fly balls in the wind.

In the fourth, D-backs designated hitter Carson Kelly’s flyball sailed over Marte’s glove, resulting in a double. In the sixth, first baseman Christian Walker’s fly was pushed by the wind toward the foul line and the ball fell in front of Marte for a double.
