Former Arizona State Sun Devils linebacker Eric Gentry committed to play for the Pac-12 South rival USC Trojans on Friday.
His decision came eight days after he entered the transfer portal. He and receiver Ricky Pearsall — another player expected to help lead his respective position group — entered the portal the same day.
According to SunDevilSource.com’s Chris Karpman, Gentry’s departure had to do with name, image and likeness opportunities.
The 6-foot-6 Gentry tallied 45 tackles as a freshman in 2021 and added two passes defensed, plus a sack.
The tackle total was sixth among ASU defenders. Five were for losses.

Per Pro Football Focus, Gentry posted the third-highest grade among Pac-12 linebackers with a 73.3.
Gentry was a three-star prospect, per 247 Sports, who joined the Sun Devils out of Neumann Goretti High School in Philadelphia.
