By the numbers: Arizona Coyotes finish season with eyes on future

The Arizona Coyotes head to the offseason after earning 55 points in 2021-22, the fewest in the Western Conference.
This was a building year, though, and the Coyotes gave their youth chances at gaining NHL reps.
Prospects Cam Dineen, Janis Moser, Matias Maccelli and Nathan Smith all made their NHL debuts, while 21-year-old Barrett Hayton finished seventh on the team in points in his first extended look.
“We had a lot of adversity, a lot of character, a lot of growth,” head coach Andre Tourigny said during exit interviews.
With a long and uncertain offseason ahead, let’s look at some of the numbers that defined this past year.

Seven players 21 years of age or younger took the ice for the Coyotes this season, while Moser represented the 2021 entry draft class.
Hayton played the most games of the group with 60.
The Coyotes had a top 10 pick last year and will have another this summer.

Eight Coyotes scored their first career NHL goals this season.
That is the most Arizona has had in a single season.

Injuries also defined Arizona’s season. Its top two goal scorers Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz missed a combined 34 games in 2021-22.
Defenseman Jakob Chychrun was held to 47 games, a career-low after making his debut in 2016-17.
Forward Phil Kessel and defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere were the only two players who appeared in all 82 contests.

Arizona finished last in the league in scoring with an average of 2.51 goals per game.
It scored one or no goals in 30 of 82 games including seven shutouts.
The Coyotes’ 206 goals scored were four back of the next fewest, 210 by the Philadelphia Flyers. They also finished last in shots per game at 25.9.

The Coyotes had some brutal spells during the season, especially a 10-game losing streak before the final three games.
But, they also had some exciting moments with six road overtime victories, the most in franchise history.
Seven of their 24 victories this past season required more than 60 minutes, which is the fourth-most in team history.
Arizona’s second-to-last victory of the year last Wednesday was an overtime thriller in Dallas.

The Coyotes say goodbye to Gila River Arena after 19 seasons.
They head east to Tempe where they will play at Arizona State’s new hockey arena for three seasons. It will be the smallest venue in the NHL with a capacity of 5,000 fans.
