Madison Bumgarner ejected in D-backs’ win over Marlins

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner was ejected after just one inning of Wednesday’s 8-7 win over the Miami Marlins for arguing with an umpire.

Bumgarner had given up a solo home run to Marlins leadoff batter Jon Berti before retiring the next three.

When getting checked for substances on his hand, Bumgarner and the umpire had some choice words for each other that eventually led to Bumgarner’s ejection.

“You guys have seen the video, I don’t know if I can say anything to make the situation better,” Bumgarner said to reporters postgame. “I am extremely proud of our team for coming back and winning because I put us in a serious hole. I didn’t have the intention of coming into the game and throwing one inning.”

The argument was reportedly over balls and strikes that escalated to the point in Bumgarner needing to be restrained by his teammates and coaches.

The pitch that Bumgarner was seemingly upset about appeared to land outside the zone in the final at-bat of the inning. He had started his walk over to the Arizona dugout presuming the inning was over.

Bumgarner finished the day with just one inning pitched, one earned run and no strikeouts.

He was replaced by relief pitcher Corbin Martin, who went four innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits. Five other D-backs pitchers took over in the matchup.

The D-backs hung in, however, looking at a 7-6 deficit in the ninth inning before a Pavin Smith two-run homer flip the score in Arizona’s favor.

Smith went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored in the victory.
