D-backs’ Daulton Varsho removed vs. Dodgers with shoulder soreness

May 27, 2022, 8:57 PM | Updated: 10:13 pm

Arizona Diamondbacks utility man Daulton Varsho was removed with right shoulder soreness during the fifth inning of Friday’s contest against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team announced.

All x-rays were negative and he will be day-to-day, manager Torey Lovullo said postgame.

Varsho was hit by a pitch in the back/shoulder by a 94.8 MPH fastball in the first inning but remained in the game for another plate appearance in the third inning.

He was replaced by Jordan Luplow who earned a walk in the pinch hit at-bat.

Although he batted as the designated hitter on Friday, Varsho has seen time at catcher, outfield and DH.

In 43 games during the 2022 season, he has hit for a .268 average, eight home runs, 21 RBIs and 15 walks.

He has primarily batted leadoff for Arizona in 2022 but has improved in all three seasons in the Valley.

The D-backs are getting thin at catcher as Carson Kelly is currently on the injured list.

Varsho was drafted in 2017 and was Arizona’s No. 1 catching prospect when he arrived in the majors in 2020.
