Arizona Diamondbacks move pitcher Luke Weaver to 60-day IL

The Arizona Diamondbacks made a trio of roster moves on Saturday, including the transfer of pitcher Luke Weaver to the 60-day IL.

Weaver was placed on the 10-day IL on April 10 with elbow inflammation and was expected to throw two innings in an extended spring training game on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

Manager Torey Lovullo told reporters that Weaver threw 23 pitches in a game today and heard very positive news.

The season got off to a rocky start for Weaver as he made the change from starter to reliever.

He allowed three hits and one earned run on 23 pitches in his first appearance in relief in his career with Arizona.

It was his first relief appearance in the majors since he was with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018.

He was then quickly placed on the IL.

The D-backs also reinstated pitcher Kyle Nelson from the IL and optioned pitcher Tyler Holton to Triple-A Reno.

Nelson has put together a solid season up to this point with a 1.23 ERA, 0.750 WHIP, 16 strike outs and two walks in 14.2 innings pitched out of the bullpen.

Holton, a rookie, has made two appearances with two strike outs and hasn’t allowed an earned run.

The D-backs take on the Los Angeles Dodgers from Chase Field with first pitch scheduled for 4:15 p.m. Catch the game on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
