2 Sun Devils, 1 Lumberjack make 2023 College Football Hall of Fame ballot

Jun 6, 2022, 10:54 AM

Two Arizona State Sun Devils and one Northern Arizona Lumberjack have made the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame induction ballot, the hall and the National Football Foundation announced Monday.

ASU

Placekicker Luis Zendejas and head coach Darryl Rogers represent Arizona State for the third and fourth times, respectively.

Zendejas returns to the ballot for the third consecutive year with a resume that will get plenty of looks come voting time. The 1983 consensus First Team All-American remains ASU’s all-time leader in single-season fields goals made with 28. Zendejas left Arizona State as the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer with 380 points.

Rogers returns to the ballot for the fourth time, as he finished his coaching career with the Sun Devils after bouncing around from four other universities. Rogers went 37-18-1 with the Sun Devils from 1980-84, which includes Rogers leading Arizona State to a 1982 Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma.

NAU

Former Lumberjack Archie Amerson is the lone NAU player on this year’s ballot. Amerson is a former running back who was a First Team All-American in 1996. He finished his career as NAU’s all-time leading rusher despite only playing two seasons.

Amerson was the recipient of the 1996 Walter Payton Award as Division 1-AA’s most outstanding offensive player. The 1996 season also included Amerson leading the Lumberjacks to their first-ever I-AA playoff appearance.
