D-backs vs. Reds declared official game after rain delay in 7th inning

Jun 6, 2022, 6:16 PM | Updated: 8:38 pm

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ matchup in Cincinnati on Monday was declared an official game after heavy rain caused a delay in the seventh inning.

Umpires called it in the bottom half of the frame with the D-backs trailing, 7-0, which was the final score of the contest.

The Diamondbacks were only able to muster one hit off Reds starter Hunter Greene, which came on a Daulton Varsho bunt single to lead off the ballgame.

Unfortunately for Arizona, Greene retired the next 20 D-backs in a row while striking out eight en route to facing the minimum 21 batters through seven scoreless innings.

Storms that began rolling through the area in the early afternoon prompted severe thunderstorm warnings from the National Weather Service and were scattered throughout the rest of the afternoon until the evening. That caused the field to be covered by a tarp and batting practice to be cut off but the game’s first pitch was only delayed by 10 minutes.

Forecasts projected a few more scattered storms in the evening with some more rain at night but the severe thunderstorm warnings were lifted roughly two hours before the scheduled first pitch. The latest scattered storm around 9 p.m. local time brought on the delay.

Arizona is in the second series of a 10-game road trip. The D-backs lost two out of three versus the Pittsburgh Pirates and will face the Reds for four games before ending the trip with three games taking on the Philadelphia Phillies.
