Diamondbacks call up INF Buddy Kennedy from Reno, option McCarthy

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected infielder Buddy Kennedy from Triple-A Reno, the team announced Friday.
Additionally, Arizona optioned outfielder Jake McCarthy to the Aces and transferred right-handed pitcher Humberto Castellanos (strained right elbow) to the 60-day injured list.

Kennedy, a 2017 fifth-round draft pick, will wear No. 45 and is making his MLB debut after hitting .296 with eight doubles, three triples, four home runs and 24 RBIs over 54 games with Reno this season.
He’s been putting the bat on the ball especially well over the last 15 games played in Reno, averaging .345 (20-for-58).
He made 28 starts at third base and 16 at second at the Triple-A level.
Kennedy, 23, is Arizona’s 21st best prospect, per MLB Pipeline.
McCarthy heads to Reno after hitting .228 with a .687 OPS over 86 plate appearances. He’s recorded 18 hits, nine RBIs, a stolen base and five walks while striking out 30 times.
Humberto hasn’t played since May 31 with the elbow strain.
Over 11 games played (nine starts), Castellanos is 3-2 with a 5.68 ERA. He’s tied for third on the team in terms of wins.
Castellanos has given up 28 earned runs on 50 hits (seven homers) and 12 walks. The pitcher has struck out 32.
The D-backs are back in action Friday night against the Minnesota Twins. First pitch is slated for 6:40 p.m. and can be heard on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
