D-backs’ Buddy Kennedy exits game vs. Padres with wrist discomfort

Jun 21, 2022, 8:20 PM | Updated: 8:42 pm

Arizona Diamondbacks rookie second baseman Buddy Kennedy came out of Tuesday’s game against the San Diego Padres with left wrist discomfort.

Kennedy, the 23-year-old who made his MLB debut Friday night, winced after taking a big swing during his at-bat in the fourth inning.

Kennedy went back into the tunnel and did not come back to take the field.

Jake Hager moved over from third base to second while Josh Rojas grabbed his glove and came in off the bench to take over at the hot corner.

Kennedy had a big first series in the majors against the Minnesota Twins over the weekend, punctuated by his first big-league home run on Sunday.

The righty blasted a grand slam to break the game open 7-1, and the crowd chanted his name, “Buddy, Buddy, Buddy.”

He came out for a curtain call.

Kennedy has started all five games he’s been active for, taking over at second base for four of them since Ketel Marte has been dealing with a hamstring strain.

Marte started Tuesday’s game at designated hitter after missing four contests.

The D-backs and Padres are in a low-scoring ballgame at Petco Park. Catch the rest of the action on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
