Left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert will start for the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field, manager Torey Lovullo said in a press conference Monday.
The D-backs are down two starters with Humberto Castellanos and Zach Davies on the injured list. Davies landed on the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation on June 28.
Gilbert will receive his fifth MLB appearance this season and his first since June 7.
The southpaw had a strong first pair of outings this year. He allowed one run in 5.2 frames during his first start on April 19 against the Washington Nationals and surrendered one run in three innings out of the pen April 25 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Gilbert’s last two starts have been rougher, as he allowed 12 earned runs in 7.1 frames.
He was optioned to Triple-A Reno on June 8 after allowing six earned runs in 1.2 innings in a start against the Cincinnati Reds.
Gilbert first came up last August and tossed in nine games for the D-backs.
The 28-year-old threw a no-hitter in his first career start, becoming the first pitcher to do so since 1953.
He had a 3.15 ERA in the big leagues last year.
