D-backs’ Pavin Smith fractures right wrist in 2nd start during Reno-stint

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman/outfielder Pavin Smith landed on the seven-day injured-list with the Reno Aces after fracturing his right wrist, the D-backs affiliate announced Wednesday.
Smith, who was making just his second start with Reno, was optioned down to Triple-A for the first time of his career on Saturaday.
He suffered the injury on Sunday and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks, according to D-backs farm director Josh Barfield.
The outfielder was the organization’s top pick in the 2017 draft and had been with the major league club since 2020.
It’s been a struggle at the plate for Smith in 2022, posting a slash line of .207/.291/.362 before being sent down.
The last two months have been especially tough for Smith, posting just a .171 average since May 6.
Arizona had called up outfielder Cooper Hummel in the move that sent Smith to Reno.
Hummel has played in all four of the D-backs’ games since his call up and has a base-hit in each contest.
With Smith’s time away from the majors going to be longer than expected, Hummel could carve out a significant role in the lineup.
