NHL Draft: Coyotes nab D Artem Duda, LW Julian Lutz in 2nd round

The Arizona Coyotes kept busy in the second day of the 2022 NHL Draft after a hectic first, selecting defenseman Artem Duda and winger Julian Lutz with the 36th and 43rd overall picks, respectively.
It came after a busy Day 1 of the draft:
Arizona stood pat at No. 3 to select center Logan Cooley, then traded up from 27th to draft center Conor Geekie at 11th. Then, Arizona turned in its 32nd pick to draft defenseman Maveric Lamoureux at 29th.
D Artem Duda – 2nd round, No. 36 overall (from Philadelphia Flyers)
Duda, a lefty from Moska, Russia, stands 6-foot-1 and 181 pounds.
In 52 games played for Krasnaya Armiya Moskva this past season, he scored 14 goals to go with 27 assists, adding 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) in 18 playoff games.
EPRinkside.com called him “a smooth-skating, two-way defender who brings a sneaky scoring touch by driving to the net with his puckhandling.”

F Julian Lutz – 2nd round, No. 43 overall (from San Jose Sharks)
Lutz, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound German, played for EHC Munchen in 2021-22.
Over 14 games, Lutz scored a goal with two assists.
“Off the rush, Lutz understands how to create favourable gaps for himself and his teammates by cutting alongside the width of the ice and manipulating the defensive line,” the EliteProspects draft guide for 2022 reads.
“He can hold the puck to let plays develop in the offensive zone and rapidly hit teammates in scoring position with both facets of his blade.”
Both Lutz and Duda have additionally made appearances for their respective country’s U-18 squad.
The Coyotes added the second-round pair after burning two other second-round picks to maneuver in the first round.
F Miko Matikka – 3rd round, No. 67 overall
Matikka is set to play for the University of Denver this coming season but in 2021-22 with Jokerit U-20 put up 19 goals and 14 assists over 30 games.
The Finnish 18-year-old stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 187 pounds.
EPRinkside.com writes that he is a “large winger with deft hands and heavy release.”
TRADE: D Jeremy Langlois – 3rd round, No. 94 overall
The Coyotes traded a 2023 third-round pick to acquire the 94th selection this year from the Chicago Blackhawks.
With that pick, Arizona drafted Langlois, who for the Cape Breton Eagles in the QMJHL scored 47 points (12 goals, 34 assists) in 60 games.
D Matthew Morden – 5th round, No. 141 overall
The 17-year-old Canadien is set to play for Harvard this coming year.
Last year, at St. Andrew’s College, he scored eight goals and added 27 assists in 41 games.
Morden is 6-foot-5 and 203 pounds.
D Maksymilian Szuber – 6th round, No. 163 overall
A teammate of Lutz on EHC Munchen, Szuber appeared in 35 games with seven points scored.
The 17-year-old lefty also played in 10 playoff games for the squad last year.
TRADE: F Adam Zlnka – 7th round, No. 204 overall
The Coyotes dealt a 2024 seventh-round pick (via Vancouver) to the San Jose Sharks to draft Zlnka, who last season for the Sioux Fall Stampede of the USHL appeared in 10 games and scored four points.
