San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Darnell Dockett was known for making outrageous statements and regularly speaking his mind during his 11 years with the Arizona Cardinals.
The 3-time Pro Bowler was released by the Cardinals this past off-season and signed with division rival San Francisco, perhaps to spite his former team.
Today after practice, Dockett gave some bulletin board material to former teammate Calais Campbell by saying that rookie teammate Arik Armstead has a brighter future in the NFL according to 49ers.com’s Tyler Emerick.
“Arik’s got a better upside – strong, fast, athletic, played basketball. And he listens. He’s going to be a dominant force for us,” Dockett said. “I’m glad to be able to enjoy rookie (dinner) night with him and really take advantage of him. Because at some point in his career, man, he’s going to be a dominant force, and he’s going to be terrorizing everything.”
To be fair, Dockett’s tone wasn’t to downplay Campbell and he did mention him as a dominant player.
What stands out is that Dockett compared a rookie who has yet to play a single down in the league to a NFL Pro-Bowler, who also happened to play on his former team that spurned him in the off-season.
The Cardinals rivalry with the 49ers is always entertaining and will continue to be with Nine Oh playing for the bad guys.
