The Arizona Diamondbacks announced the team recalled infielder Yonny Hernandez from Triple-A Reno and placed LHP Tyler Gilbert on the 15-day injured list with a sprained left elbow, retroactive to July 27.
Gilbert had not found his stride in 2022, posting an 0-3 record with a 5.24 ERA and 1.252 WHIP over 34.1 innings pitched.
After throwing a no-hitter in 2021, Gilbert finished with a promising 3.15 ERA and 1.025 WHIP over 40 innings pitched.
Gilbert has pitched better as of late, giving up six earned runs over his last four starts. This run saw his ERA drop almost 2.5 points from 7.88 on June 7.
Arizona acquired Hernandez on Thursday in an Opening Day trade with the Texas Rangers due to an injury to Josh Rojas.
Hernandez averaged .217 and slugged .252 to go along with 31 hits, six RBIs, 15 runs scored and 11 stolen bases over 43 games (166 plate appearances) in 2021 with Texas.
Over 12 games with Arizona, Hernandez averaged .083 and slugged .083 with two hits and two runs scored.
The utility man can play third base and shortstop, as well as second base.
